![]() ![]() It may therefore be helpful to sketch the pretheoretical assumptions that have guided my experimental work before turning to a more autobiographical account of how I came to adopt these ideas. Along the same lines, it has suited my temperament to be guided by general concepts and to use laboratory work as a way to modify these concepts when necessary and to populate the framework with experimental findings-putting empirical flesh on the theoretical bones, as it were. ![]() In our article on levels of processing (LOP), Lockhart and I described our ideas as constituting a framework for memory research rather than a theory ( Craik & Lockhart 1972). In this article I present my current ideas about human memory processes, but I also embed this 2020 vision in an account of how these ideas evolved over the years through interactions with many students and colleagues, and in light of experimental findings from my own lab and the laboratories of others. ![]()
